This is one of several images that originated as photo collages for a color photography class I took in college, but unlike the others, this one is based on a true story. My friend Margaret and I were driving down Stanford's University Avenue when, out the window, we saw a hummingbird hovering near a Christmas light on one of the trees lining the street. Tragicomically, it flew from light to light as if they were flowers, checking every one. I drew the tree from a photograph of one the actual trees on that street.

I listened to Kurt Vonnegut's book of short stories Welcome to the Monkey House as I drew.
